The town of Vang Vieng, in Central Laos, is blessed with bountiful expanses of remarkable caves, lagoons of turquoise water, rivers, mountains and cliffs, each offering its own adventure sports of your liking. One of its most prominent, tourist-attracting destinations is the river Nam Song that flows calmly through the town, exuding a sense of tranquility that you cannot disengage from. It is the prime locale to drift serenely through lush green forests on either sides of the river and leave the humdrum affairs of your daily life behind. Behold the brooding presence of the mountains standing tall in the background and enthrall yourself with the magical flora looking upon you as you drift down the Nam Song. The stunning limestone mountains that tower over Vang Vieng are riddled with caves of all kinds. One such cave is the Ban Tham Xang also known as the Elephant cave. It is an important pilgrimage site situated on a limestone cliff, above Ban Tham village. The cave gets its name from an elephant head structure naturally formed several hundred years ago, and has since been revered. It has become an important Buddhist shrine to which hundreds of pilgrims flock every year. The cave also has a sunset viewpoint with a stunning view over the plains and the Karst Mountains. Another famous cave is the Tham Nam Water cave. It is the highlight of a cluster of caves near Vang Vieng and an excellent site for tubing through its tunnels. Other caves in this area include Tham Hoy and Tham Loup also known for some lovely Buddha statues and stalactites.

Whether it is trekking from cave to cave or interacting with locals of different ethnicities, there is enough to satisfy everyone’s need for adventure. This trip includes visiting four different caves and spending time in two different villages. If you are looking for a day to exercise and relax and avoid the crowd of tourists at the Nam Song river, then this trip is ideal for you!

Itinerary Details

1 Day Itinerary: WELCOME TO VANG VIENG!!!

In the morning, your day will begin by riding approximately 15 km north of Vang Vieng and reaching the Nam Song river. If it is the dry season, you can easily cross the river via an overlying bridge, whereas if you opt for this trip in the rainy season, you will be required to take the boat to cross the river. After crossing the river, one of our experienced guides will escort you to the first cave Tham Xang (Elephant Cave). The Tham Xang cave is renowned for its naturally formed elephant limestone sculpture and a reclining Buddha statue. Local Buddhists come here to light incense sticks and pay homage. The guide will enlighten you on the many legends and dark secrets of the cave. Next, the guide will lead you to a traditional Lao village and introduce you to the village locals. They will tell you about the history of the village and you can spend some time understanding their distinct way of life. Moving further from the village, you will trek past green rice fields and some stunning mountain views to reach two more caves – Tham Hoy and Tham Loup. These caves too have some more Buddha statues and intricately formed stalactites. These caves are known to have safely hidden hundreds of Lao people from soldiers during wars, and their names can be seen written in the caves. Following this visit, you will then trek to the final cave in the itinerary, the Tham Nam Water Cave that is famous for tubing. Simply cool off in the pool of water formed at its mouth, or tube inside the cave before heading to a scrumptious barbecue lunch naturally cooked and served on banana leaves. Having satiated your stomach with finger-licking food, you will finally trek from the water cave to Hmong Village. Hmong Village is home to minority population of tribals who have peacefully lived in the mountains for hundreds of years. Consider yourself lucky to interact with these tribal people and play with the kids of the village. You will have plenty of time in hand to click photographs and take videos. The local guide can also walk you around the village if you are interested to explore more. After an unforgettable time spent in Hmong village, you will now head back to Vang Vieng in the truck waiting for you. At Vang Vieng, your tour and hence, your journey with us comes to an end.
