The town of Vang Vieng, in Central Laos, is blessed with bountiful expanses of remarkable caves, lagoons of turquoise water, rivers, mountains and cliffs, each offering its own adventure sports of your liking. One of its most prominent, tourist-attracting destinations is the river Nam Song. The Nam Song River gracefully flows through the town, exuding a sense of tranquility that you cannot disengage from. It is the prime locale to drift calmly through intense, lush green forests on either sides of the river and leave the humdrum affairs of your daily life behind. Behold the brooding presence of the mountains standing tall in the background and enthrall yourself with the magical flora looking upon you as you drift down the Nam Song. The stunning limestone mountains that tower over Vang Vieng are riddled with caves of all kinds. One such cave is the Ban Tham Xang also known as the Elephant cave. It is an important pilgrimage site situated on a limestone cliff, above Ban Tham village. The cave gets its name from an elephant head structure naturally formed several hundred years ago, and has since been revered. It has become an important Buddhist shrine to which hundreds of pilgrims flock every year. The cave also has a sunset viewpoint with a stunning view over the plains and the Karst Mountains. Another famous cave is the Tham Nam Water cave. It is the highlight of a cluster of caves near Vang Vieng and an excellent site for tubing through its tunnels. Another great reason to visit this small tourist town is for the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is a natural spring lagoon getting its name for the crystal clear blue waters, just deep enough to jump in to for a cool swim.

Whether it is kayaking down the Nam Song river or tubing in the caves, there is enough to satisfy everyone’s need of adventure. If you are looking for a day away from the hectic worldly affairs of your life, then this tour will be the perfect mix of thrill and comfort waiting for you!

In this tour, you can choose to spend half the day or the entire day doing various activities, as per your preference.

Itinerary Details

1 Day Itinerary: WELCOME TO VANG VIENG!!!

Our day begins by meeting in the town centre. A 14 km ride from Vang Vieng will bring you to the first cave, Tham Xang, also called the Elephant Cave. Ban Tham Xang, known for its remarkable limestone formations, lies on the banks of river Nam Song. The cave harbors an important Buddhist temple deeply revered and visited annually by Buddhist pilgrims. At this cave, you will have a guide reciting to you legends and sagas of the cave and temple and even some tales of the recent years. After spending some time here, you will then pass through a small Lao town and village with vast green fields of rice cultivation. From here, you will proceed to the Tham Nam (Water Cave) where a pool of clear, cool water forms at the mouth of the cave. Enjoy swimming in the spring waters after which an exciting adventure of tubing awaits! You will tube up to almost half a kilometer inside the cave. Tubing is sure to get your stomachs grumbling, which will thus be followed by a lavish BBQ lunch set up by the Tham Nam cave itself. After enjoying an appetizing lunch, you will walk back to a village, which is about 30 minutes of walking from the cave site. At this village you will be picked up to begin the kayaking trip. Kayaking will begin at Khmu Village, 10 km north of Vang Vieng and is our kayak starting point. A friendly English speaking and kayaking-experienced guide will brief you on the basic techniques of paddling and the necessary safety instructions to be remembered throughout the trip. Once done with the training session you will then embark on a 3 hour kayaking journey down the Nam Song river! Further down the river, you will have the opportunity to visit plenty of bars along the river banks. In this time, relax, enjoy some refreshments or even grab a bite to eat if you’re hungry. These spots have many recreational activities to keep you entertained, such as swimming in the river and playing table tennis or snooker with fellow travelers.

From here, a truck ride brings you to the famous Blue Lagoon, where you can swim in the pristine waters of the lagoon or simply unwind in the small bamboo huts provided by us. The tour comes to an end as you arrive back in Vang Vieng.
